The Gerald R. Ford Institute for Public Policy and Service is both an academic concentration and a co-curricular activity. In addition to having course requirements, Ford also requires that members complete 15 hours of community service each semester. Although there are volunteer opportunities on campus, I have opted to volunteer in the greater Albion community, specifically in Albion schools. Throughout my time in Ford I have volunteered as a high school English tutor; I have helped with the city of Albion's "Festival of the Forks" celebration; participated in Adopt-A-Classroom, where I assisted a second grade class with reading, math, and science activities; and volunteered as a Junior Achievement instructor. Working in the schools in particular has made me feel more connected with the city of Albion, not just the campus. The students, young and old, have helped me develop my communication skills, patience, and a true admiration for overcoming obstacles. Ford also encourages upperclassmen to serve as mentors to incoming students. I have been a mentor for two years, helping to make my mentees feel welcome and at home on campus, while helping them adjust to the college workload. I have been elected to represent the junior class on Ford Council this year as well. As a member of Ford Council, I will help choose and organize the activities for the institute, promote the institute to prospective students, and give the institute a voice on campus. Specifically, I am on subcommittees in charge of social events for the institute and creating a blogging interface where students can chronicle their internship experiences for current and prospective Fordies to see. Beyond those activities, Ford sponsors several lectures each year, as well as hosting social events for its members. |
