Wesley Hall Government is a newly established organization on campus. Its mission is to serve as an organized voice for the opinions and needs of residents of Wesley Hall, the largest residential building on campus. Wesley Hall Government works with Residential Life to help strengthen the educational, social, and residential life of Wesley Hall occupants. I served on the executive board of Wesley Hall Government both years that I lived in the building. My freshman year I served as Vice President, and moved up to President in my sophomore year. As such my duties have included running meetings, serving as the representative of Wesley Hall Government on campus, and chairing all of the events put on by Government. I also created and maintained the Wesley Hall Government website. My freshman year, we sponsored four events; a game of Assassins, Wesley Hall Government Penny Wars (a building-wide competition that we used to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief), Game Day at Wesley, and Wesley Hall at the Movies. I was heavily involved in the planning and organization of all of those events. Sophomore year, WHG sponsored a game of Assassins, Homecoming Spirit Week and Dance, Door Decorating Contests, Game Day during Little Sibs Weekend, and a Study Break and Ice Cream Social. Wesley Hall Government presented interesting challenges from a organizational standpoint. Wesley is primarily a freshman building, so there are rarely returning members. Furthermore, the new members are also new to campus and unfamiliar with the rules and regulations that the college has for organizations. Being on the executive board both years, I was able to learn a great deal about dealing with less-than-favorable situations, addressing the concerns of a constituency, writing constitutions and petitions for funding, and understandings the limitations of my organization. It was a great learning and growing experience!
