Cameroon Trip, 2006

Getting Excited

On the 14 hour plane ride there (with a layover in Paris), we realized how excited we were.

And...

How far away we were. No turning back now.

Doula

Our first experience at a hotel was in Doula.

Beautiful Sites

While in Cameroon we saw some beautiful sites, like the Atlantic ocean from our hotel room in Limbe

Mt. Cameroon

and the lava spill from Mt. Cameroon that we had the opportunity to climb.

Metche

and the Metche waterfall

Birthplace

Even the scenic view off of a hill where our profssor Emmanuel Yewah was born.

The Capital

We also got the opportunity to go to the capital of Cameroon, Yaounde.

Everyday Life

We witnessed and experienced the everyday life of Cameroonians, like crossing this man-made bridge to get from one end of a village to another.

Everyday life

Also, these man-made stairs down a hill of red clay.

Dancing

In Batchingou we were able to see the elder's of the village do a traditional dance for us.

Rural Places

We saw many rural homes along highways, small houses like these are the norm in Cameroon.

Traffic

Our experience on the road was... different. None of the cars in this picture are parked...

Ramadan

In Fumban, we were able to witness Ramadan festival.

Family

We were also able to meet some of Dr. Yewah's family, like his nephew Esra whom we fell in love with right away (he fell in love with the camera too!)

Traditional Food

It took a while to get used to Cameroonian food, especially dishes that held little surprises like this dish that contained a chicken's foot.

The School

Finally, we arrived at the school in Batchingou that is still running. The kids were beautiful, happy, fun, and intelligent.

Our Day

We spent our day playing with the kids of the school, playing hand games, dancing, taking pictures and making friends.

Pictures

These kids loved getting their picture taken and seeing themselves on the little digital amera screens.

Candy

We gave out candy, bubbles, and other fun things for the kids

Saying Goodbye

When the day was over it was hard to leave them all and say goodbye, but we had to meet with the chief

Finding Our Mission

When we arrived at the school that had recently been shut down, we found it falling apart and found our mission to re-build

Weakness

We were looking at a building that children were supposed to learn in. How were we going to re-build it? How would we find the resources?

Responsibility

We knew that it was our responsibility to give these kids all the resources that we had, to make their learning experience everything that it could be. And then we started The Nwagni Project...
