African Myths

The Line Between Myth and Reality

Myth #1: African people live in trees.

Actually, the majority of African people live in homes like you or I. The size, shape, construction, and material used to build these homes differ from urban to rural areas as they do in the United States and other countries. There are indigenous cultures that live in open land, but there is no truth in the myth that Africans live in trees.

Myth #2: If you go to Africa, you will get AIDs.

HIV and AIDs are contracted by sharing of bodily fluids. You cannot contract HIV or AIDs simply by being near someone that suffers from this illness. Also, not everyone in Africa has AIDs. The AIDs crisis in Africa is largely due to a lack of contraception, lack of education about safe sex, and lack of access to medicine. If you go to Africa  (or anywhere else) be intelligent, make safe decisions, and you will not come back with AIDs.

Myth #3: Africa is a country.

Africa is a continent that is made up of several independent countries. Just as "Europe" is made up of several different countries, so is Africa.

Myth #4: There are lions all over Africa.

There are lions in Africa. However, you could not point to any random place on the African continent and find lions there. Africa is made up of rural and urban cities and communities just as any other continent. However, it is true that there are grasslands that are occupied by a wide variety of wild animals, lions included.

Myth #5: Africa is made up of Jungle.

There are no jungles in Africa, jungles are largely found in South America. Africa does contain rainforests, but is not covered in rain forest and does not contain jungle.
