Personal Statement
I feel that I
possess great leadership skills. In addition, I am very patient and
understanding. Whenever any of my mentees had issues last year, I was
available and had the appropriate response. I'd also say that I am
friendly, outgoing, and compassionate and those are three very appropriate
attributes.
Being an FYE mentor this year was a great opportunity for me.
Not only did I help new first years, but I grew as a person. My
leadership skills improved, my counseling skills improved, and I feel like
my people skills in general approved. It was a phenomenal experience
that I wouldn't trade for anything.
My hope from last
year had come true with the FYE program, I helped first years transition and
I gave them a solid resource they could count on. I hope to continue
that and develop my own skills further.
I think the most
difficult aspect of the Student Mentor position is trying to keep the
students interested. I had a difficult time getting half of the class
to come to meetings (I attribute a lot of that to the professor, he told
students they didn't have to attend our sessions right at the beginning of
the year).

The Coffee House
was an incredible experience for me. Having the responsibility of
booking bands, opening the Coffee House, and generally fulfilling the role a
manager does at any normal business was a great opportunity for me. I
learned I have excellent time management and negotiation skills. Being
a booking manager you have to be able to negotiate with booking agents in
order to get the best deal. I served as a role model to other
students, including my mentees who would visit the Coffee House, by
displaying how well I served such a high position of responsibility. |
