The Academics.

Ah, Home.

Academic Criteria.

    Major: Economics and Management
    Minor: History
    Institute:  Gerstacker

The why behind my major/minor...

As an incoming first-year, I had little idea what I really wanted to "do" with my life, let alone what avenue to go about majoring.  It was the last day of SOAR (a program established to familiarize incoming first-years with this great college) when my parents and I entered into a Gerstacker introduction session.  As I listened to the-then director, "Butch" Dwyer, discuss his beloved Institute, I felt it fit me.  I did not know what I wanted to do, and Gerstacker guaranteed to give its students direction and discipline.  As a now major under Gerstacker, I feel the Institute enables me to make connections with other people, see the business world in a whole new light, and understand financial terms that once were not accessible to me.

Gerstacker also includes the stance of summer school (seven week-program) for sophomores.  As much as I love my summer's at home (I live on and for the water) our sophomore class will grow extremely close this summer, not to mention acquire new knowledge in terms of understanding the "real" business world.  I arranged a crew of seven ladies to occupy a 19th century house during the course of these next seven weeks--I am proud to say I have a good handle on my culinary abilities (according to my friend Brit).  I am also gearing up for Australia, come July!  I have two days after the duration of summer school to pack for a little over four months--daunting feat.  I will be attending Australian National University with the intentions to take an Australian History course, Sociology course, and Marketing course.  The program AustraLearn, has been quite helpful in setting me at a little more ease for my journey (that and my friend Billy, also from Albion decided to attend ANU as well).  My main worry continues to hold: not having enough room in my suitcase (I feel this is a genuine concern)!

The minor, History, was officially declared in early November and I am happy with my decision.  History has always been a passion, and supported highly by my dad (he was a history major at Colgate).  I have especially enjoyed Wes Dick's Environmental History class.  It was a bittersweet ending, the coursework was intense, but I am going to miss Wes, his words, and the creative aspects of the class.  I have a renewed perspective of my place in the world and how it is up to people informed about pollutants and other dangers to our environment that we start progress towards the greater good of cleaning it all up.  I am an oddity, I suppose when it comes to trash, I organize clean-ups (including one at Holland Park in April and one with Kappa Alpha Theta in April as well) and was even voted "Whale-Kisser/Tree-Hugger in high school, that title still makes me laugh.
