Academic/Career Planning Goal Sheet Exercise: May 3, 2006

(Sleight-Student Leadership Criteria)

The Academics.

Co-Curricular Involvement:

Goal  Statement:  I am exploring different avenues in the business field, and non-profit organizations are at the top of my list.  From my involvement in the soup kitchen at St. James Episcopal church, I feel I am witnessing first hand (literally by helping every Saturday evening) with this exploration.

Continue to help every Saturday.

 Every Saturday.

I am afraid other things will come up and prevent me from helping out.  The solution: make the soup kitchen my most important priority.  I became involved with the soup kitchen through Student Volunteer Bureau (I am the       Communications chair).  I have only missed two Saturdays since beginning to volunteer at the soup kitchen (Easter and a sorority function).  I love doing this, it is a highlight of my week.  I am still going every week, I would say goal is a living, work in progress.

Seek funding for the Soup Kitchen.

 Right away.

Honestly, finding an organization that is able to make a contribution.  The solution: put myself out there and realize that funding can be found if I try hard enough.  Actually, great news for this action step!  I received a very generous donation from SVB, by   talking about the soup kitchen to the group.  I am so thankful and cannot wait to hand the money to Phyllis on Saturday!  This is a beginning program, so funding is very necessary.  It is running on the generosity of fellow church members and they also provide a food cupboard.  Goal met!  I just have to continue to donate more!

Build relationships with my fellow volunteers.

 Saturday evening.

There are different volunteers each week.  The solution: Just make sure to converse with the regulars as well as the incoming volunteers.                                                                                                                                                             I have continually brought different guy friends every week to help out, and I feel they really enjoy their time volunteering.  I have grown close to a volunteer named Phyllis and the chef, Jock.  Jock is one of the most interesting people I have ever met in my life.  I also have began conversing with their pastor "Ed."

A work in progress, enjoy doing it!

Build relationships with the people we serve.

 Saturday evening.

Some of the diners do not really want a relationship with me.  The solution: continue to be patient, loving, and friendly.  I will attempt to make everyone always feel comfortable.  I have helped transport some elderly ladies from Maple Oak retirement home usually every week.  From my crazy car rides, I have formed relationships, especially with a lady named Alice.  Alice was shocked that I remembered her name the other day, but how could I forget someone like her?  Names are my specialty.  I know that one lady likes smaller portions and that one young girl loves two percent milk and cookies. I could tell you a little bit about every person I have come to serve, they touch me.  Another work in progress, I love a lot of these people.

This goal is important to me because:  Volunteering is a passion of mine.  I feel I am so fortunate that I should give back to others.  I really have no idea what I want to do with my life, but I want it to be something that brings me pleasure.  Volunteering, in a career sense, would be very rewarding!

*Follow-up note: I still continue to aid this organization, nearly every Saturday evening from about 5 to 7pm.  Since day one I have brought my good friends, Zac and Matt (my sister, Jenny and friend Jon have always helped) to help.  We are regulars.  The pastor, Ed, always gives us a big hug and forces us to slow-down and eat.  Phyllis is also a lady who regularly helps out and when I said this last weekend (December 2nd) that we would not be there for nearly six weeks she looked so sad and asked "how she could live without me?"  It was very sweet.  Working at the soup kitchen is one of the major highlights of my week, I feel lost without it.
